MBA Resumes

If you are applying for MBA-level jobs, below are some important resume tips:

  • A resume isn't about you! A resume is not your chance to tell everyone your story. It is human nature to want people to listen to your story. But often people only look at a resume for 4 or 5 seconds. This person is looking for very specific things on your resume. If your resume is cluttered with unimportant information, they may not see the right words.
  • Write a new resume for each job. This may sound like crazy advice, but it is very important. You should know enough about each position to be able to create a resume tailored to that position. If you can’t write a new resume for each company, then you probably don’t know enough about the job. If a job is important enough to spend a significant part of your life there, then it's important enough to write a new resume.
  • What to include in a resume Functional skills are the most important. The employer is looking for someone to be able to contribute the first day they arrive on the job. The second most important item on a resume is industry experience.
  • Qualities to highlight Provide solid evidence that you have drive and leadership experience. Also, you might want to highlight something from your background that makes you interesting. This will make you human to the interviewer.
  • Cut out the fluff words! Cut out phrases like "sustainable competitive advantage" and other MBA-speak. It doesn't mean anything to the person reading your resume (or to anyone else for that matter).
