MBA Application Timeline

  • January: Start thinking about where you want to go to school. What kind of programs suit you best? Are you interested in a particular MBA specialty? What schools are best for that specialty. Would you prefer to learn under the case method or by lecture? Talk to alumni of programs, if possible. Do internet research on each program.
  • February: Take a GMAT practice test. The GMAC offers one for free. How did you score? How does your score compare to the expected scores at your top schools? This will give you an idea of how much you need to prepare for the GMAT. If you are a long ways away from the average score at your top school, you should begin studying for the GMAT immediately.
  • March: Request applications from your target schools as soon as they come available.
  • April: Identify people who you want to write your recommendations. Set up a meeting to talk with each of them and explain what the recommendation entails.
  • June: Begin working on your application essays. Ask your recommenders to begin writing their recommendations. Give them deadlines that are far in advance of your application deadline. This will ensure you have adequate time in case someone backs out or is unable to complete the task.
  • July: Request all of your transcripts from previous institutions.
  • August: Take the GMAT and have your scores sent to schools. Put the finishing touches on your essays. Be sure to have someone else proofread them.
  • September through January: Mail your application to schools as early as possible in each round in which you are applying.
  • January through April: Keep checking your answering machine and mailbox, and keep your fingers crossed!
